A Surefire Hit

Tennis legend Mats Wilander, doubles master Luke Jensen, and TV’s People’s Court Judge Joseph Wapner lead the star-studded contingent who’ll have a swinging time at the Berkeley Tennis Club in our 15th annual Alta Bates Summit Celebrity Classic, held this year on Saturday, September 30.

Wilander, a member of Sweden’s 1980s winning Davis Cup teams, captured a remarkable eight career titles in Grand Slam events (including three of four in 1988, earning him the No. 1 world ranking) and won 33 singles titles. Jensen — nicknamed “Dual Hand Luke” owing to his ability to play tennis left- or right-handed — garnered 10 career doubles titles, four with brother Murphy, including the 1993 French Open doubles championship.

The Celebrity Classic features tennis and golf tourneys and primarily benefits Thunder Road, the Medical Center’s renowned substance abuse recovery program for teens. The golf tourney, held this year on September 11, is a perennial sellout, but $25 spectator tickets are still available for the tennis tourney, which features headliners in mid-day exhibition matches, followed by a black tie–preferred gala at the Claremont Resort & Spa. For more information or to participate as a tennis spectator (free for kids under age 10), player, or sponsor, visit www.absfdn.org or call (510) 204-1667.
