Alta Bates Summit Earns Top National Honors

No doubt you’re aware that Alta Bates Summit is held in highest regard by the local community it serves, but you may not know about the national honors the Medical Center has received of late that corroborate its trusted standing and validate donors’ contributions to its programs and services.

“When we look at overall national measures, Alta Bates Summit has achieved an impressive standard of performance beyond that of other Bay Area hospitals,” says CEO Warren Kirk. “In 2007, we were named Leapfrog Top Hospital for Safety and Quality — one of only 41 hospitals in the nation to achieve that designation. We also received the HealthGrades 2007 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, ranking us among the top 5 percent in the nation for overall clinical excellence.” Most recently, HealthGrades named Alta Bates Summit (where more babies are delivered than any other Bay Area hospital) among the leading hospitals in the country for clinical excellence in maternity care, awarding it a five-star rating.

What objective data inspired these stellar awards? Consider the following:

  • HealthGrades analyzed more than 12.5 million hospital delivery and neonate records from 2004 through 2006 in more than 1,440 hospitals for its report on women’s health outcomes.
  • In the Distinguished Hospital Study, HealthGrades reviewed millions of records between 2003 and 2005, evaluating the clinical quality performance of all hospitals across the country in 28 procedures and diagnoses.
  • The Leapfrog Group’s 2007 Top Hospitals list was based on 1,285 hospitals that responded to a quality and safety survey, one of the most complete and current assessments of hospital quality and safety available.

“Nothing is more important to our patients than our commitment to quality care,” emphasizes Kirk. “Of course, none of our quality initiatives would succeed without the involvement of the staff and the support of our generous donors. Those honors are truly a tribute to them.”
