A Gift for Giving

“We have been married for 53 years,” says Silvija Hoag, M.D., pictured with her husband, Roger Hoag, M.D. “Our thinking runs very much in parallel in deciding which things we’d like to support.”
Octogenarian Roger Hoag, M.D., figures he delivered some 4,000 babies over the course of his 38 years in OB/GYN practice at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, and he proudly admits that the gift he’s given of quality, nurturing care gives back to him still.

“I see patients all over the place — in Berkeley, at the theater, in Safeway,” says Dr. Hoag, who retired from practice on his birthday in 1996. “I’ll meet a couple of women walking down the sidewalk, and one will say, ‘Dr. Hoag, you delivered this girl.’ They’re pleased to see me, and I’m always pleased to see them.”

Dr. Hoag’s contributions to his patients are matched only by his generous efforts to advance his field and the medical center to which he’s been so devoted. At various times, he’s served Alta Bates Summit as a department chair, medical staff president, and Foundation Board president; he is now a Foundation Lifetime Trustee. He also maintains his appointment as a clinical professor emeritus at UCSF.

Recently, Dr. Hoag served as Co-Chair of the Centennial Campaign for Excellence Women & Infants Committee. He and his wife, Silvija Hoag, M.D., a retired hematologist, honored the campaign with a significant contribution. “We felt it was a worthwhile goal and purpose,” he says, “and hope that the Medical Center will continue to maintain its excellent reputation.”

Speaking of reputation, Dr. Hoag’s has spread far and wide. This month, the Association of Fund Raising Professionals, Golden Gate Chapter, named him 2006 Philanthropist of the Year. “I’ve always tried to support community and national programs that I thought were important,” he says. Thank goodness for Alta Bates Summit that the Hoags have followed through on that pledge.
